OH MY GOD. FOOTBALL SEASON IS BACK!
(well almost…)
The NFL returns Thursday. To be exact: the NFL kicks off Thursday, August 3 at 8:00pm EST. The Dallas Cowboys will take on the Arizona Cardinals in the Hall of Fame Game in Canton, Ohio. So, clear your calendar, reserve the television, and get ready to celebrate the return of football.
Yes, it’s only a preseason game. (And yes, the Canadian Football League has been on television for the past few weeks.) And yes, since it’s the first week of the preseason, the starters will play a series and then hold clipboards on the sidelines for a few hours. For the remainder of the game, backups and journeyman football players will be on the field and we will be privy to watching some very sloppy football. We will be annoyed at the level of play, and we will complain on social media about the starters not playing more.
But in all fairness, the NFL preseason is where those backups and journeyman football players are given an opportunity to perform and hopefully make the final rosters of these NFL teams. With the average NFL career lasting less than three years, players are more than willing to throw their bodies around in an effort to sign a contract with some guaranteed money. As the rosters get cut down each week of the preseason, we will hear heartbreaking stories and we will bear witness to the unexpected injury. In the end, many players will fail to make NFL rosters, thus ending the dream.
At the end of the day, football is back. So getcha popcorn ready!
